It’s already halfway through the 2024-25 college football season, and it has not disappointed. On October 12, the game between No. 3 Oregon and No. 2 Ohio State captured the attention of football fans worldwide. Having been at the game, I can say this was truly the most wild fan atmosphere I have ever experienced. With the game coming down to the final seconds, the Ducks managed to edge out the Buckeyes. In front of a record-breaking 61,128 fans at Autzen stadium, Dillon Gabriel emerged as the game’s star helping solidify himself as a suitable candidate for the Heisman. As we track the Heisman race each week, we may look back at this game as it will likely be a defining moment for Gabriel—but how will it impact his overall narrative? Let’s find out.
Gabriel, who transferred from Oklahoma, has already made his presence known to Oregon. In the biggest game of his career, he proved his worth with an amazing performance: Completed 23 of his 34 pass attempts for 341 yards, throwing two touchdowns and running for another in the fourth quarter. Gabriel connected with Evan Stewart for a 10-yard touchdown to make his first passing score of the day. Later in the second quarter, Gabriel found his favorite wide receiver, Tez Johnson, for a 48-yard passing touchdown. Early in the fourth quarter, Gabriel’s 27-yard rush to give Oregon the lead demonstrates that he isn’t just a pocket passer but also an elusive threat on the ground. It is safe to say this game has placed him firmly in the Heisman conversation.

Previously ranked outside the top 10 in ESPN’s Heisman poll, Gabriel needed a statement game to keep his name in the running. This performance couldn’t have come at a better time. Gabriel now ranks number four in the latest poll surpassing Jeremiah Smith, wide receiver at Ohio State, who ranked fourth. Media outlets from all over, including FOX Sports, were quick to praise his leadership and impact, which further boosted his profile. However, In the eyes of many viewers, the Heisman race isn’t close with Boise State running back Ashton Jeanty being the clear favorite as of now.
Gabriel’s win over Ohio State will do a lot more than bolster his chances of a Heisman. Winning that game likely enhanced his appeal to sponsors and other companies too. Athletes could have all the talent in the world but the truth is that most athletes tend to get overlooked and ignored if they do not have proper self branding. The more eyes you have on you, and the more people who know your name, the better chance you have of getting their vote. Oregon, moving up a spot in the AP poll to number two, also helps his opportunity.
Gabriel’s story, being recruited as a three-star, and transferring from multiple schools to get to this point, can add another layer to this narrative. As the Heisman race continues, Gabriel’s challenge will be maintaining, and even exceeding, his prior performances. It only takes a one-off game to be surpassed in a voting poll for the Heisman. Ashton Jeanty remains at the top and will likely stay there in the upcoming weeks unless he has a setback.
What do you guys think of Dillon Gabriel’s chances for the Heisman after this game? I certainly believe there is a case to be made. Share your thoughts in the comments below and follow this blog for weekly updates as we track the Heisman race through the season.
